After a highly successful military career as an officer, I got married a year after I retired. What is so incredible about the experience is that I thought I knew something about life, however I have since learned life begins with having a family. Twenty years in the United States Air Force, 12 consecutive years in the Pentagon, and a year on Capitol Hill working for a member of Congress I learned there is more to life than work. A year after retiring from the USAF, I found the love of my life and we got married. My wife and I wanted children and we were blessed with a baby girl. Three years later we were blessed again, this time with a baby boy. My daughter is almost four years old and my son is almost six months old. My wife and I sit and discuss how our life has changed. Neither of us had children from a previous marriage because neither of us had been married before. One of the primary reasons we enjoy being parents is because there are no limits to the amount of love you receive from your children. Are there challenges being parents? You bet there are challenges when it comes to rearing children. The beauty of the experience is that as parents we have the obligation to shape and mold our children. Shaping and molding children is not as simple as it sounds, in fact I believe our children shape and mold my wife and I:). In other words, I thought I knew a lot about life and after becoming a parent I discovered there is a whole new world when it comes to child rearing. That is not all, being a husband and a parent is the most gratifying experience I have ever had in life. Why? It takes me back to my childhood and the outstanding job my parents did with their nine children. When it comes to being the best parents you can be, its like a mirror. In other words, I see myself and I see my parents and find myself doing the things they use to do. Be the best parent you can be because your children deserve your attention and your love. Love your family and they will love you. Paul Lawrence Vann is a motivationall speaker and author of the book, Living on Higher Ground.
